Opa and Nana visit Houston (March 11-15, 2011)

Who is charming enough to induce Opa and Nana to visit Houston? Lyra, of course! Opa and Nana wanted to spend some quality time with their lovely granddaughter, and figured that as long as they were in Houston they could also catch up with their son and daughter-in-law. Such a nice idea!

Lyra was super excited when she overheard Daddy saying that Opa and Nana were coming to visit. Although she has seen Opa and Nana a few times before (in Shanghai, Birch Bay, and Marin), this time was different -- they were coming to her town. She was the hostess! Naturally, she needed to welcome her grandparents and show them the sights of Houston. A much easier task now that she is a walking baby!

On Sunday morning, Daddy, Mommy and Lyra had breakfast with Opa and Nana at the Robin's Nest bed and breakfast, in the historic Montrose neighborhood.

Nana and Lyra in front of Robin's Nest. Lyra was ready to be a tour guide, but realized she had never been  here before. "Sorry Nana, I can't tell you much about this place. Um, Howard Hughes might have ridden his bike here once."

On Opa's lap, waiting for breakfast to be served. "To make Opa happy, I just need to be cute." Lyra has learned well the canons of entertaiment law from her Daddy.

"Hey Opa, shall we start breakfast?" This is actually Lyra's polite way of saying that Daddy started eating without permission. Pretty crafty, Lyra!

Although Lyra already ate breakfast at home, there's nothing wrong with a second breakfast. A half-hour has already passed, and besides, those are two of her favorites, scrambled eggs and strawberries.

A picture of the whole family. Well, almost the whole family -- Mommy is the photographer.

"Have you been to Hermann Park, Opa and Nana?" Lyra asked. Another trick question! The true reason was Lyra knew the park so well and wanted to show Opa and Nana around her neighborhood.
A fountain on the edge of the park, where many people come to take pictures for weddings and quinceañeras. "Opa, shall we take photos here?

Opa, Nana and Lyra play Lyra's favorite game, called "Where is your ear?" You got it the first time, Opa! Next time, Lyra will ask a harder question.

What made all three of them so excited?

As a true outdoor girl, Lyra also brought her Opa and Nana to the Houston Arboretum. Although Lyra has been "hiking" in her stroller or Daddy's backpack many times, this was her first time hiking on her own since she's been able to walk.

"Hey Nana, do you like hiking? Where do you like to go? This is my favorite hiking place, of course. There are no mountains in Houston, so on my next visit to Marin we'll have to go to Mt. Tam. "

Lyra is so excited to be hiking on her own. She's smiling at everybody, chatting with her grandparents, pointing to flying birds, picking up leaves -- what a great day!

"Opa, a souvenir for you!"

"I am faster than Opa !!!" Lyra cackles with glee, smiling a secret smile.

 "We made it! Hooray!"

Five days flew by so fast! Opa and Nana have now returned to their home in Marin, but poor Lyra thinks they are still in Houston, and that she will see them in the morning after taking Mommy to the train station.

Opa and Nana will always remember the time Lyra showed them her favorite clump of dirt.
