Our road trip started at 8:00am with a fully loaded car, in which almost everything belonged to Lyra: her stroller, her Pack 'n' Play, her cooler stuffed to the gills with fruit, cheese, jar food, and so forth. Yes indeed, Lyra was well prepared for her first road trip.
It's a five-hour drive to Lost Maples, so naturally Lyra insisted on stopping for a mid-morning snack at the Kountry Bakery in Schulenberg for some delicious kolaches.
Lyra loves intentional misspellings for effect!
By the time we got to San Antonio, it was time for lunch. Lyra insisted on stopping for some Tex-Mex at Los Barrios.
Lyra on the patio at Los Barrios, waiting for her lunch. "Miss, do I look like I want mild salsa?"
"This is not the queso fresco I ordered! My tongue is in shock."
Lyra gets in a couple laps between courses, as a digestive aid.
Around 3:00pm, we arrived at our B&B, The Lodges at Lost Maples. The maples weren't the only thing lost -- we didn't see an office or a proprietor either! But following the instructions in our email, we went to our cabin, and found it unlocked with the key inside.
Here I am!
visions of maples, dancing in her head
Lyra could not wait to see the maples. "We can relax when the sun goes down -- let's go to Lost Maples now!" We started by hiking the Maple Trail-East Trail loop. Mommy kept telling Lyra to take it easy because the trail was moderately challenging, but Lyra would have none of it. She insisted on walking with Daddy.
"Bring it on!"
Our journey begins.
Even though it was not a banner year for leaves, the park was beautiful.
"Are these maples? The leaves are red, so they must be maples. Right, Daddy?"
A family photo
"Daddy, let's call Uncle Greg again! WHAT? He hasn't been to Lost Maples, either? Unbelievable. As a native Texan, I must insist that he refrain from any further references to himself as a ''former Texan.' Unless he uses an asterisk. That might be okay."
"Quiet, dad! You'll scare away the armadillos."
"Rats! I forgot my swimsuit."
To mix things up, on the West Trail Lyra decided to stroller it.
"I do like the snack tray feature of this stroller."
"Wow, Lost Maples, beautiful !! "
Lyra (and Mommy): still unclear on the concept of "blowing a kiss."
"End of the trail! Hooray!"
At around 5:30pm, we finished our adventure in Lost Maples and drove back to the cabin. Lyra had some solid food, crawled around on the hardwood floor, and then went to sleep at her usual time of 7:00pm. It was a big day!
On the morning of the second day, we decided to walk around the neighborhood.
In front of our cabin
Lyra off-roads it.
"I don't actually like wearing my hood, but at the same time it adds +2 cuteness. What's a girl to do?"
Lyra is disgusted to realize that the previous occupants were barbecuing with something other than mesquite.
Lyra is almost doing the Hook 'em Horns. Time to nip that in the bud!
"What's a roadtrip without a stop at a winery?"
"Scratch that -- what's a roadtrip without a stop for barbecue? Brisket and pork ribs and sausage...me likey!"
We arrived home at 6:00pm. It was just about time for Lyra's nighttime routine. Lyra had some solid food, a hot bath, and a bedtime story, and promptly fell to sleep at 7pm. Not a bad day. Good night, Lyra! I am sure you will have a good dream - beautiful maples all over the hills and valleys.
