Go Stanford! (Orange Bowl Day, January 3, 2011)

January 3, 2011. A day rife with possibilities. Was Lyra thinking about her first birthday, two days hence? No way! Not with Stanford playing in the FedEx Orange Bowl that night against Virginia Tech. Lyra's Daddy, Uncle Greg, and Nana all attended Stanford. But her Uncle Stephen attended VPI. So Lyra was conflicted. But (let's be honest) not too conflicted. Of course she wanted Stanford to win, but maybe Virginia Tech could get a first down or two, and keep things close for the first quarter. Then she could tell her Uncle Stephen, "It's okay. Your team played really hard. And they did well just to make it to the Orange Bowl."

Lyra in her regalia, trying out for the Stanford Bookstore catalog with her best faraway stare and half-smile. Get that baby an agent! The sweatshirt was a gift from Nana and Opa, purchased during Nana's 45th reunion.

Here, Lyra is actually looking far away, having recently discovered the concept of "outside." "Hey, Mommy! Did you know there are people and cars and trees out there? Also, Virginia Tech football is totally overrated. Stanford's going to mop up the field with those clowns!"

"Daddy, can I stay up four hours past my bedtime to watch the Orange Bowl? Puhleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?"
...
[cut to 6:31pm]
"zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
...
[the next morning]
"Stanford 40, Virgina Tech 12! I told you they could do it! Viva Stanford! Viva Luck! Viva Harbaugh!"
