Summer in Houston (2011)

In Houston, summer comes early and stays late--it's like the worst houseguest ever. But Lyra doesn't mind, because it means more opportunities to model her swimming togs. Nobody rocks a swim diaper like baby Lyra!

Most babies can't out-cute Nemo, but Lyra is not most babies.

Swimming is a step-by-step process for Lyra.
Step one: dip toes in water.

Step two: begin splashing.
"Wah, splashing is so fun! Has this pool really been here the whole time?"

Lyra is eager to unleash the Summer Sanders within, but hates getting her hair wet. What's a well-coiffed baby to do?

After too many laps to count, Lyra towels off.

"Hey Daddy--the pool's great and all, but need I remind you that I'm the original four season beach girl?" So said Lyra, and lo, Daddy was filled with regret. For Lyra spoke true, as true as ever words were spoken. (Dedicated followers of the blog will recall Lyra's first beach trip of the year, to Rockport in celebration of Mommy's birthday. But that was back in February.) And verily, it came to pass that on Memorial Day, Mommy, Daddy and Lyra drove to Bryan Beach to catch some tasty Third Coast waves.

Lyra has her Lilly Pulitzer sundress and her cute hair clip on, with strappy summer sandals and Hello Kitty lunch box at the ready. As usual, she's waiting on Mommy and Daddy. "Come on, slowpokes!"

Lyra inspects the seaweed; Mommy looks decorative.

A perfectly balanced baby awaits the next wave.

Did we say perfectly balanced?

"Whee! Waves are fun! Has this beach has been here the whole time, too?"

That trip marked the end of Lyra's summer fun, as such:

Lyra: Mommy, what is the temperature in Houston today?
Mommy: About 97, I guess. And don't forget the humidity.
Lyra: How about Birch Bay? What's the temperature there?
Mommy: About 70 today. No humidity.
Lyra: I'm outta here. See you in September!

Lyra now has many outdoor summer activities planned, because Daddy is taking her to Birch Bay for three months with her Opa and Nana. Four season beach girl? Try 24-7 beach girl! A tanned and confident Lyra will make her triumphant return to Houston in September. Lyra has but one concern: she knows she looks really cute in her swimsuit, but she also knows it rains a lot in Birch Bay. Will she have enough opportunities to show off her one-piece? To be on the safe side, Lyra invites her good friend Zoe (and Zoe's parents Joe and Grace) over for a farewell pool party.

Zoe passes the ball to Lyra, and Lyra passes the ball back to Zoe.
Zoe passes the ball to Lyra, and Lyra passes the ball back to Zoe.
Zoe passes the ball to Lyra, and Lyra passes the ball back to Zoe.
...
This could go on for a long time.
(It did.)
